5 Signs It's Time to See an Orthopedic Surgeon

Aches and pains are a normal part of life — but some symptoms shouldn't be ignored. An orthopedic surgeon specializes in the muscles, bones, and joints, and seeing one early can prevent a small problem from becoming a big one. Here are five signs it's time to make an appointment.

1. Pain that lasts more than a few weeks

Discomfort that lingers beyond two to three weeks — or that keeps returning — is a sign something isn't healing on its own. Chronic joint or bone pain deserves a professional evaluation to identify the cause and prevent further damage.

2. Reduced range of motion

If you can't straighten your knee, raise your arm overhead, or bend a joint the way you used to, the stiffness may point to arthritis, a tendon problem, or a joint injury that benefits from early treatment.

3. Instability or 'giving way'

A joint that buckles, catches, or feels unstable can indicate a ligament or cartilage injury. Left untreated, instability increases the risk of falls and additional damage.

4. Swelling that won't go down

Persistent swelling around a joint is a signal of inflammation or injury. If elevation, rest, and ice don't resolve it, an orthopedic evaluation with imaging can find out why.

5. Pain that interferes with daily life

When pain keeps you from sleeping, working, or doing the things you love, it's time to act. The sooner you're evaluated, the more treatment options — many of them non-surgical — are available to you.
